The brief was Western-style rooms for a family of four. We removed the tatami and paper screens and rebuilt the alcove and closet as a TV unit. The alcove's display shelves were not thrown away but kept, one on each side.
Turning a tatami room Western-style is more than changing the surfaces. Tatami and flooring sit at different heights, and the insulation goes in differently. Here we did both floors at once, including insulation and plumbing (bathroom, toilet, kitchen, washbasin).
We did everything at once because the family of four was moving in straight away. Whether that or staged work while living there is better depends on the house and your situation. We plan the order with you at the estimate stage.
